With the rising population, on a global scale, wherein recent estimates provided by United Nation's, states that the world population is projected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050. Consequently, this demographic trend creates an increased demand for food, particularly meat products. Meat is an important source of macronutrients and micronutrients, such as proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and vitamins that provide the ability to build and repair worn-out tissues as well as fulfill the energy requirements of the body. The increasing demand for meat has led to a three-fold increase in industrial meat production. However, the increased demand for meat cannot be solely met by conventional animal farming methods, necessitating the requirement of alternative approaches. As a result, cultured meat, also known as cultivated meat, has emerged as a potent protein alternative solution catering to the surging demand for protein amid the rising population.

The traditional method of raising cattle to satisfy the world's demand for meat comes with several challenges, leading to a hindered sustainable resource management by having a negative impact on the environment through increased greenhouse gas emissions, water scarcity, and overuse of land resources. It is important to note that now, it is believed that about 75% of agricultural land is used for animal farming, leaving only a tiny amount of area available for grain production. Additionally, the production of meat is responsible for nearly 60% of greenhouse gas emissions from the food industry. As a result, there has been a noticeable increase in interest in the development of cultured meat to combat these issues.

The process of culturing meat involves a bioreactor, where stem cells that have been extracted from living animals are grown using cell culture media as part of the production process. Therefore, other names for cultured meat are cell-based meat and lab-grown meat. Since it requires less land and water than traditional meat, cultured meat has become a possible substitute, levying several advantages over traditional meat in terms of production and consumption, including a lower environmental effect. Additionally, there is a noticeable movement in customer tastes toward other sources of protein, causing cultured meat products to become more and more popular. Given this change, the growing demand for plant-based proteins, and the advantages that producing cultured meat has for the environment, the global market for cultured meat is expected to expand significantly over the forecast period.

Overall artificial meat market, which comprises of cultivated meat as well as plant-based meats is gaining increased research interest; with significant rise in the patent activity in these areas.
