This IDC Market Note publishes a forecast for the number of total logical applications periodically, with this update extending the previously published forecast from 2025 to 2028. "The industry's use of modern application development techniques, increasingly augmented with generative AI, along with modern packaging such as containers, has led to an explosion of software applications that form the modern digital world," said Gary Chen, research director, Software Defined Compute at IDC. "The technology industry continues to lower the barrier to creating and running software, which fosters new digital innovation."
