INTRODUCTION

According to a study published in the Canadian Journal of Infectious Disease and Medical Microbiology in 2021, more than 1.3 million cases of needlestick injuries (NSI) among health care workers (HCWs) are reported every year in the US and Europe. NSIs are known to occur frequently in healthcare settings while using injections and can lead to transmission of various blood borne pathogen. In fact, as per the estimates provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HCWs are at an increased risk of exposure to harmful pathogens, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus, due to needlesticks. Some of the common factors that are believed to be the cause for high number of NSIs include inessential use of sharp devices, inadequacy of personal protective equipment, lack of training, and inappropriate disposal of sharp devices and needles. In order to reduce the number of such cases, several initiatives have been undertaken to ensure safety of HCWs and patients, which include the launch of 2010 EU directive initiative on sharps injury prevention by the European Union and development of smart needles and advanced injection devices. Since the use of needles is unavoidable in healthcare, device developers have come up with highly advanced product designs and safety measurements to limit the risk posed by sharp needles. These safety injection devices have several advantages, including needle shielding and automatic retraction of needles into the syringe barrel when the plunger is released, and easy disposal of safety needle.
