An electric arc furnace (EAF) is a low cylindrical vessel constructed of thick steel plate. It features a dish-shaped refractory hearth and three vertical electrodes extending downward through a dome-shaped, removable roof. Typical shell diameters for 10-ton, 100-ton, and 300-ton EAFs are approximately 2.5, 6, and 9 meters, respectively. Electric arc furnaces use graphite electrodes to input electrical energy into the furnace, using the arc generated between the electrode tips and the charge as the heat source. Using electricity as a heat source, the furnace atmosphere can be adjusted, making it particularly advantageous for melting steels containing high levels of easily oxidizable elements. Using high-temperature flue gas from the furnace, the raw materials can be preheated through technology and equipment, achieving high efficiency, energy conservation, environmental protection, and high yield.
A DC electric arc furnace is an electric arc furnace powered by direct current. Like an AC electric arc furnace, it utilizes the arc generated between the electrodes and the charge (or molten bath) to generate heat for melting. It can be used to melt steel, alloys, and non-ferrous metals. A DC arc furnace converts three-phase AC power into single-phase DC power via thyristor rectification. An arc is generated between a furnace bottom electrode (anode) and a graphite electrode (cathode) to generate a smelting arc. The main differences between DC and AC arc furnace equipment include the addition of a rectifier, a single graphite electrode at the top instead of three, and the addition of a furnace bottom electrode. The primary charge for electric arc steelmaking is scrap steel. Generally speaking, higher carbon, nitrogen, and residue contents make the electric arc process less attractive for producing low-carbon tough steel.
