Scoliosis Management Market - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends, and Forecast 2031 - By Product, Technology, Grade, Application, End-user, Region: (North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Middle East and Africa)
The global scoliosis management market has experienced significant growth due to the increasing prevalence of scoliosis and advancements in brace technology. Among the various products available, Cervical Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Orthosis (CTLSO) and Thoracolumbosacral Orthosis (TLSO) braces are crucial in managing different types of scoliosis.
CTLSO braces are designed with a two-piece structure and a metal cervical attachment that supports the neck and back region, preventing spine movement. They are primarily used to treat upper back deformities and neck issues. If these braces are removed, the spinal curve may return to its original position and could worsen over time.
Thoracolumbosacral Orthosis (TLSO) Braces
TLSO braces are used for the mid to lower spine area. These braces are customized based on the degree of the spinal curve and are prescribed for children with curvature degrees between 20 and 40. The pads in the braces provide pressure to slow down scoliosis progression, allowing for partial movement and accommodating body growth. If the curvature does not increase while wearing the brace, patients can potentially avoid spinal fusion surgery.
Lumbosacral Orthosis (LSO) Braces
LSO braces cover all or part of the lumbar region and are used to correct the lateral curve of the spine. These braces compress the abdomen and lumbar spine tightly, providing posture support to the spine. The pressure applied by the braces can be adjusted through laces or the back of the belt.
Scoliosis Types and Management
Infantile Scoliosis
Infantile scoliosis affects infants between birth and four years of age, presenting as an abnormal curve shaped like an S or C. This condition is more common in males than females and falls into two categories: those whose curvature disappears with growth and those whose curvature progresses and requires bracing to slow its progression.
Juvenile Scoliosis
Juvenile scoliosis is diagnosed in children aged five to nine years. This type of scoliosis tends to grow faster and becomes progressive, necessitating the use of braces to strengthen the spine and restrain curvature progression. Braces need to be adjusted every 12 to 18 months to accommodate the child's growth and changing curvature.
Adolescent Scoliosis
Adolescent scoliosis occurs between the ages of 10 and 18 years. Although the exact cause is unknown, it may be due to hormonal imbalances, asymmetrical growth, and muscle imbalance. Physical therapies and treatments are administered for curves between 10 and 20 degrees, while braces are used for curves between 20 and 40 degrees to prevent progression. These braces need to be worn continuously for most of the day to achieve effective results.
Market Dynamics
Growth Drivers
The global scoliosis management market is primarily driven by the high prevalence of the disease, the widespread adoption of braces, and technological advancements in tracking devices that monitor patient health. Additionally, the increasing demand for non-invasive therapies is expected to drive market growth for scoliosis braces.
Challenges
Despite the growth prospects, several challenges persist. The braces need to be worn for most of the day, which can cause stiffness, skin irritation, and rashes. Additionally, the compression of the chest wall and abdomen can lead to breathing problems, affecting oxygen flow and pulmonary functions.
Market Outlook
The global scoliosis management market is expected to continue growing, driven by less expensive braces and increasing awareness among people. These factors are anticipated to further propel market growth over the forecast period.
